Bowls Betting

Bowls, also referred to as lawn bowls, is an outdoor sport in which a ball (bowl) is rolled towards a smaller stationary ball, known as a jack. Featuring easy-to-understand rules, the object in the game is to roll one’s balls (bowls) in such a way that they come to rest nearer to the jack than those of the opponent.

While bowls may not have the biggest presence in the sporting world, the sport features some of the most exciting competitions throughout the year. And at Winissimo, we bring to you the opportunity to wager on every major bowls tournament. Join us today!

Bowls basics: A quick overview

Bowls is usually played on a flat lawn, which is a rectangular and precisely levelled grass surface. The flat lawn, also known as the bowling green, is divided into six rectangular playing strips called rinks. The bowls are referred to as woods, though they may be made of wood, rubber or any other material. The bowls, which are black or brown in colour, are also flattened on one side to ensure that they follow a curved path when rolled.

At the start of the gameplay, a jack is rolled to the other end of the green to serve as a target. Once the jack has come to rest, the jack is aligned to the centre of the rink and players then bowl in turn.

  • In singles and doubles games, each player uses four bowls.
  • In triples, every player uses three bowls.
  • In fours or rinks games, two bowls per player are used.

In bowls, an end is said to be complete when all the bowls have been delivered. Speaking of the scoring, all the bowls of one team nearer the jack at the finish of an end than the nearest bowl of the opposing team count for one point each. When playing bowls in pairs or fours, a game consists of 21 points. On the other hand, a game consists of 18 points in triples.

Popular bowls events to bet on

Bowls competitions are not as mainstream as those of other popular sports like cricket and football, but there are a few competitions that attract huge viewership and are also enjoyed by sports bettors. Below are some of the pre-eminent bowls competitions to enjoy Bowls betting at:

World Indoor Bowls Championship

The World Indoor Bowls Championship is a highly popular bowls competition that attracts players from all around the world. Being an annual competition, the World Indoor Bowls Championship takes place every year in January.

The first season of the championship was held in 1979 at Coatbridge in Scotland for men’s singles only. The venue was briefly moved to Alexandra Palace in London during the 1988 season. Since the 1999 season, the World Indoor Bowls Championship takes place at the Potters Leisure Resort, Hopton on Sea, Great Yarmouth, England.

Initially, the competition included only men’s singles events. But today, the competition consists of women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed double events. The inclusion of all these events makes the World Indoor Bowls Championship a highly popular and exciting competition for Bowls betting.

World Bowls Championships

Unlike the World Indoor Bowls Championship, this competition is held outdoors and takes place every four years. Apart from these differences, triples and fours are also added to singles and pairs in World Bowls Championships.

The inaugural edition of the tournament was first held in 1966 in Melbourne, Australia. Since the 2008 season, the events for men and women in the World Bowls Championships have been organized together. While there’s a medal for each event, the best men’s team in the competition wins the Leonard Trophy, and there’s the Taylor Trophy for women.

Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games is an international multi-sport event that involves athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The first season of the event was held in 1930, and it takes place every four years since then.

Currently, there are 72 teams that take part in the Commonwealth Games. And the competition includes sports like rugby sevens and bowls, which are typical for the participating countries. The next season of the Commonwealth Games is scheduled to start in July 2022.

A look at the different bowls betting selections

Although bowls is not as widespread as other sports, the game does come with a variety of bowls betting options. Below are some of the most common bowls betting markets available on our platform:

To win outright

This is one of the easiest bowls bets to understand. Here, you’re simply guessing which team will end up as the winner of the event. As guessing the final winner at the start of the tournament is difficult, the odds for this bet are relatively high.

Match winner

As the name implies, this bet allows you to choose the winner of a given match. But unlike other sports betting options, you will only be guessing which player/team wins as draws are not possible in bowls.

Match-Ups

This bet shares some similarities with the outright winner bet type, but instead of betting on the final winner of the tournament, you get to choose which player/team will perform better in a particular game.
